1968
Possibly the last entry BANG didn't mean much for some of you. What does Prague have to do with an encircled tank? What it means is that it's a "no tank zone." A kind of pop-culture icon of resistance that typifies the spirit of former Czechoslovakia. Historically it's referring to the summer of 68' when Soviet tanks rolled into Prague and Bratislava inciting student opposition.
Above is a great photo by Ladislav Bielik which really captures this deep self-determination to resist oppression. The image is a man taking on a tank in downtown Bratislava. Currently in the same location as this picture was taken is an outdoor exhibition of Bielik's photos. Click here for details.
Anyways, this is stirring in me the idea of "resistance" in contrast to a culture that is strangely indifferent to present day injustices.
