Red Rock

What do you give to some who has got everything? Their life. That is a part of the story/legend/life? of Palffy. Palffy & his descendants owned huge tracts of land (with castles on them) all over Slovakia. This guy was stinking rich! Myth has it that on a dark and stormy night Palffy was traveling to one of his estates by coach. A stag leaped out of the forest, startling is hoses to a standstill. Getting out of the coach Palffy saw that the horses had halted on the edge of a cliff and would have gone over if not for the stag. Palffy quickly acknowledged that the stag was a sent from God to save his life. From then on the Palffy family crest was a stag & a coach wheel. You can see this sign all over Slovakia on old castles and manor houses.

A few weeks ago we had a 3 day visit from our missionary friends the McCartney family & Heather P. They serve with Calvary Chapel Ezstergom in Hungary, but their main ministry focus is kids clubs in Sturovo, Slovakia (across the Danube). Well, they wanted to check out a few Slovak castles...so we did. This one is a Palffy castle called Cervena Kamen (“red rock”) near Modra/Bratislava. It was pretty cool, but it rained super hard at the end of our trip.

We descended down into the ‘dungeon’. Actually, it was a massive series of storerooms with sweeping vaulted ceilings. Amongst other things, these ‘treasuries’ held copper.
